The Stories We Tell

The heart of a leader gets assaulted often. When we are pursuing virtue and character, there is an element of attack. There are forces of evil that try to rise against the forces of good. It can especially occur within our own thoughts and feelings.
What are the stories we tell ourselves when these negative thoughts occur? Have we given into these messages: I am not good enough. I don’t have what it takes. I can’t do this.
As leaders we can be tempted to give into the lies of who we are. There is such a thing as deception, fallacy, and attack against the great dignity of our true selves.
When we get discouraged, I think it is good to do some reflection.
Why am I discouraged? What is the lie I am believing? And what is the truth that counteracts that lie?
Journal about it. It’s good to get out of our head and put things down on paper. When I do this exercise, on the left side of the page I write the lies, and on the right side I write the counteracting truth. The truth is there. We need to have the right story to tell.
