Process
1 – Initial call to discuss the composition, medium, and deadline.
What kind of artwork do you want and by when? Do you want me to work from a reference photograph or from imagination? What kind of frame are you looking for, if any? These are some of the questions I will ask. The details for your specialized art piece are documented in a commission contract and sent to you for signature.
2 – We agree on a price.
We review your budget, and I present to you the costs of the artwork, which include material and labour costs. My initial starting price for a commissioned oil painting is $1,000, and increases based on the size of painting and the complexity of the subject matter. We don’t proceed to the next step until we agree on a reasonable price.
3 – The work begins.
After sending the invoice for the first payment, I purchase the materials, draft the initial sketches, create the piece, and review progress with you as it happens. I typically collect 25 to 50 percent of the commission price up-front to fund the initial expenditures and labour.
4 – Finishing touches.
When the artwork is completed, I share the final version with you. When you confirm that you like it, I varnish the piece, if needed. You can pick it up for free at my studio location in downtown Ottawa, Ontario, or get it shipped to you in Canada for an additional price. I collect the remaining funds that are owed for the commissioned work and you get to take it home.
