Setting Limits

A leader can do anything, but a leader can’t do everything.

A leader is not supposed to do everything. Sometimes, we can struggle with pride and try to be all things to all people. That is too much of an expectation. It only adds to the burden of leadership.

The primary motive of leadership is to serve out of the giftedness and strengths one has to offer. We can recognize that there are weaknesses and blind spots that prevent us from being everything. That responsibility, of being all things to all people, falls on a higher power.

Leaders will always be needed and will always be asked for help. The main question we can ask is, “Do we have the capacity?” Because in order to serve others, we need to take care of ourselves. It’s about setting limits.

Are our limitations limiting us? Or are our limitations freeing us?

We can choose to:

Prioritize. Determine the most important things;

Focus. Say no to the things that don’t align with our priorities;

Commit. Go all in with our commitments.

If limits lead to freedom, then we have reached a new level of personal leadership.
